Exploring the Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization in CoIII -Decorated {DyIII 2 } Units

2016

We have prepared and structurally characterized a new member of the butterfly-like {CoIII 2DyIII 2} single-molecule magnets (SMMs) through further CoIIIdecoration, with the formula [CoIII 4DyIII 2(OH)2(teaH)2(tea)2(Piv)6] (teaH3=triethanolamine; Piv=trimethylacetate or pivalate). Direct current (DC) susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed allowing the extraction of possible crystal-field parameters. A simple electrostatic modeling shows reasonable agreement with experimental data. Alternating current (AC) susceptibility measurements under a zero DC field and under small applied fields were performed at different frequencies (i.e., 10–1500 Hz) and at low temperatures (i.…

Montanacin-L and montanacin-K two previously non-described acetogenins from Annona montana twigs and leaves

2020

A phytochemical study on Annona montana twigs and leaves led to the isolation of eleven annonaceous acetogenins, including two previously non-described compounds, montanacin-L and montanacin-K. Their structures were elucidated by extensive analyses of spectroscopic data (IR, UV, HRTOFMS, EI-MS and 1H, 13C and 2D NMR). The ACGs montanacin-L, montanacin-K, montanacin-D and montanacin-E were evaluated for their toxicity against Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Results revealed that montanacin-D and montanacin-K exhibited insecticide action. Fil: Ruiz Hidalgo, José. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Biotrickling filter modeling for styrene abatement. Part 1: Model development, calibration and validation on an industrial scale

2017

Abstract A three-phase dynamic mathematical model based on mass balances describing the main processes in biotrickling filtration: convection, mass transfer, diffusion, and biodegradation was calibrated and validated for the simulation of an industrial styrene-degrading biotrickling filter. The model considered the key features of the industrial operation of biotrickling filters: variable conditions of loading and intermittent irrigation. These features were included in the model switching from the mathematical description of periods with and without irrigation. Model equations were based on the mass balances describing the main processes in biotrickling filtration: convection, mass transfe…

Effect of different solutions in reversing the damage caused by radiotherapy in dentin structure

2020

Background Previous studies have shown that radiotherapy of the head and neck region can cause direct changes in dental structure. This study evaluated the effect of different solutions on the dentin chemical composition and collagen structure of irradiated dentin. Material and Methods Sixty maxillary canines were distributed in 2 groups (n=30): non-irradiated and irradiated (radiotherapy: X-rays of 6 MV in 30 cycles of 2 Gy to 60 Gy). The teeth were sectioned, sanded, and polished to obtain 3x3x2 mm fragments, which were redistributed in 3 subgroups (n=10) according to the treatment employed: chlorhexidine 2% (CL), chitosan 0.2% (QT), and 0.5 M carbodiimide (EDC). The samples were analyzed…

Bifunctional poly(acrylamide) hydrogels through orthogonal coupling chemistries

2019

Biomaterials for cell culture allowing simple and quantitative presentation of instructive cues enable rationalization of the interplay between cells and their surrounding microenvironment. Poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogels are popular 2D-model substrates for this purpose. However, quantitative and reproducible biofunctionalization of PAAm hydrogels with multiple ligands in a trustable, controlled, and independent fashion is not trivial. Here, we describe a method for bifunctional modification of PAAm hydrogels with thiol- and amine- containing biomolecules with controlled densities in an independent, orthogonal manner. We developed copolymer networks of AAm with 9% acrylic acid and 2% N-(4…

Albumin-Folate Conjugates for Drug-targeting in Photodynamic Therapy.

2016

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on the cytotoxicity of photosensitizers in the presence of light. Increased selectivity and effectivity of the treatment is expected if a specific uptake of the photosensitizers into the target cells, often tumor cells, can be achieved. An attractive transporter for that purpose is the folic acid receptor α (FRα), which is overexpressed on the surface of many tumor cells and mediates an endocytotic uptake. Here, we describe the synthesis and photobiological characterization of polar β-carboline derivatives as photosensitizers covalently linked to folate-tagged albumin as the carrier system. The particles were taken up by KB (human carcinoma) cells within …

Stabilization and detection of hydrophylloquinone as di-O-methyl derivative

2016

Phylloquinone is a redox active naphthoquinone involved in electron transport in plants. The function of this reduced form remains unclear due to its instability, which has precluded detection. Herein, a simple method that permits the stabilization of the reduced form of phylloquinone by di-O-methylation and HPLC detection is described. Fil: Sussmann, Rodrigo A. C.. Photoactivatable Adhesive Ligands for Light-Guided Neuronal Growth

2018

Neuro-regeneration after trauma requires growth and reconnection of neurons to reestablish information flow in particular directions across the damaged tissue. To support this process, biomaterials for nerve tissue regeneration need to provide spatial information to adhesion receptors on the cell membrane and to provide directionality to growing neurites. Here, photoactivatable adhesive peptides based on the CASIKVAVSADR laminin peptidomimetic are presented and applied to spatiotemporal control of neuronal growth to biomaterials in vitro. The introduction of a photoremovable group [6-nitroveratryl (NVOC), 3-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)butan-2-yl (DMNPB), or 2,2′-((3′-(1-hydroxypropan-2-yl)…
